Gallery of Best Cloud-Free Days in
California Current
A script was run using Wimsoft software (http://wimsoft.com) to find the best daily coverage of
satellite-detected surface Chl-a off Southern California, estimated by the number of
valid pixels. Missing pixels are due to the combined effect of clouds and/or missing
orbital coverage of the various satellite sensors.
The command that produced the sorted list of the daily
Chl-a images was: wam_count *mapped.hdf 60 -
cal_aco_3840x3405_calcofi.hdf Sort
The coverage
(Count of valid pixels and % Clear) depends, of course, on the
selected
target area
(mask). The Chl-a images themselves are much
bigger and cover the west coast of North America from Oregon to southern Mexico.
Some images
show the artifacts of merging data from multiple sensors and
multiple passes.
Lower-quality
data from
Terra-MODIS are included (with a lower priority, i.e. when data from
other sensors are missing) and are often the source of the visible artifacts.
The list was
compiled using data from 1997 to 28-Nov-2009.
