MODIS quasi-true color images of California fires

·        The MODIS sensor on both Terra ands Aqua satellites provides near real time data from up to 2 passes per day: Terra's descending node at approximately 10:30 local time and Aqua's ascending node at approximately 13:30 local time.

·        The following images were produced as RGB (red-green-blue) images using MODIS bands 1, 4, 3. The 250 m and 500 m data were remapped to a map with 250 m resolution.

·        The preferred way of viewing these images is with Google Earth that makes spatial navigation easy. You need to have Google Earth installed from http://earth.google.com/). You can also view the PNG file. The image first seen in the browser is compressed to a small size. To see the full PNG file you need to click on it or save it locally (with right-click).

  • The following images were created with Wimsoft (http://wimsoft.com) software. A more detailed tutorial is available here.
